Lauren was born on February 1, 1988 in Whittier, California. The native of Idyllwild, California has a Bachelor's of Science degree in parks and recreation management from Northern Arizona University, where she was a member of the track and field team. During the 2010 Olympics, one of her throw coaches jokingly challenged her to try bobsled, knowing that bobsled pilots often recruit sprinters to be brakemen. She did, and was told she was too small for bobsled, but they gave her the contact information for the skeleton program. The rest is history.
