What does it take to represent Team USA in Bobsled & Skeleton?

USA Bobsled/Skeleton (USABS) is responsible for selecting athletes to participate in all Protected Competitions, as defined by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee bylaws.

Advancement through USA Bobsled & Skeleton’s athlete pipeline is based on measurable performance standards, competition results, and coaching evaluation.

Selection criteria vary depending on:

  • Discipline (bobsled vs. skeleton)
  • Role (pilot, brakeman, or skeleton athlete)
  • Specific event or tour

Athletes, coaches, and parents should carefully review each selection document to understand exactly how athletes are evaluated and chosen.

Performance Matters

Push track times, start speed, and on-ice results are critical benchmarks

International race results (IBSF-sanctioned events) carry significant weight

Roles Are Different

Bobsled pilots are evaluated on driving skill and race results in addition to strength, speed, and push times

Brakemen/push athletes are evaluated on strength, speed, and push times

Skeleton athletes are judged on both push performance and driving consistency

For each competition:

  • USABS High Performance staff prepares athlete nominations based on the selection criteria
  • A final team is submitted for approval by the appropriate Selection Committee
  • Selections must comply with both USABS and USOPC policies
