Church caps first half of the season with 13th place finish in Altenberg’s four-man bobsled World Cup

ALTENBERG, Germany (December 19, 2021) – Hunter Church (Cadyville, N.Y.) teamed with Josh Williamson (Lake Mary, Fla.), Hakeem Abdul Saboor (Powhatan, Va.) and Charlie Volker (Fair Haven, N.J.) for 13th place in today’s four-man bobsled World Cup race in Altenberg. Codie Bascue (Whitehall, N.Y.), Carlo Valdes (Newport Beach, Calif.), Nic Taylor (Hayward, Calif.) and Kris Horn (Pembroke, Mass.) finished 17th.


Church bettered his 21st place finish in Altenberg two weeks ago by eight places today. Church, Williamson, Abdul Saboor and Volker pushed identical start times of 5.23 seconds in both heats for runs of 55.06 and 55.19 seconds. The crew finished 13th with a combined time of 1:50.25. 


Bascue, Valdes, Taylor and Horn had consistent starts of 5.21 and 5.20 seconds. Bascue navigated the team to the finish in 55.28 and 55.16 seconds for a two-run total of 1:50.44 for 17th place.


Francesco Friedrich remains undefeated this season. Friedrich, Thorsten Margis, Martin Grothkopp and Alexander Schueller of Germany were victorious again with a combined time of 1:48.88. Canadians Justin Kripps, Ryan Sommer, Cam Stones and Benjamin Coakwell took silver with an aggregate time of 1:49.16. Russia’s Gaitiukevich, Mordasov, Travkin and Laptev were third in 1:49.23. 


Today’s races concludes the first half of the 2021-2022 season. Athletes will have a one week break before the World Cup tour makes its sixth stop in Sigulda, Latvia for the New Year.
