Trent was born in Anaheim, California on July 9, 1989. The native of Desert Hot Springs, California participated in the hammer throw while attending Fort Hays State University in Kansas. He read a story about Mike Gonzales, a pentathlete who switched to bobsled; Gonzales made the ’98 and ’02 Olympic games for Puerto Rico. Trent was done with his hammer throwing career and wanted to continue with athletics. Gonzales gave him a mock-combine in San Diego, and later that year he went to Park City for a Push Camp. He found that he disliked the bobsled, but enjoyed the skeleton.
