Bonnie Kilis was born on Saturday, May 14, 1988 in Hartford, Conn. The native of Marlborough, Conn. attended Sacred Heart University, where she was a four-year heptathlete on the track and field team. Kilis graduated from Sacred Heart with a bachelor's degree in biology. Upon graduation, Kilis continued her education, obtaining a master's degree in criminal justice. After her track and field career ended, Kilis became an Olympic weightlifter.

Kilis was first introduced to the sport of bobsled by Brittany Reinbolt. Reinbolt was watching the national weightlifting competition in Salt Lake City, Utah because her friend was lifting and happened to be in the same weight class as Kilis. Following the meet, Reinbolt sent Kilis a friend request on Facebook, but Kilis didn't recognize Reinbolt so she deleted the request. Reinbolt then contacted the weightlifting coach at Sacred Heart University, who passed along the message. Reinbolt was in need of a brakewoman for the North American Cup (NAC) races, so she asked Kilis to join her in Lake Placid. Kilis raced with Reinbolt in two NAC races in Jan. 2015. Following the summer, Kilis attended rookie camp in Lake Placid and officially began the sport in Oct. 2015.
